THE i-FACTOR:  MORE AND MORE COMPLICATED OR BACK TO THE ROOTS?

Dear Partner,

Why is the iPhone so popular and also such a commercial success? I believe the answer is more than simple. Apple is living an idea, which all competitors have promised to their customers but not realized. An intuitive, easy to handle product without the comprehensive manuals to read. A strategy we all should embrace!

Starting in 2006 we began using easily handled hardware and software products. It is essential to focus on the basic, not the feasible functionalities. The focus of our developments is not maximum technology & features, but user-friendliness.

It is our permanent goal to keep the OSD menus of our Prisma boards clearly arranged in order to minimize the commands on a project-oriented basis. Our user software ArtistaControlCenter is another example of this, which can be used without complex manuals, and is regularly confirmed by our customers.

Your feedback is important to us. Never hesitate to contact us with your ideas of improvements. Every idea is welcome!

Sincerely,

Bernhard Staller

European Central Bank Rating / German Federal Bank

As we already advised in our May Newsletter, at the beginning of this year we decided to meet the challenge of financial ratings. This has meant that we have had to relentlessly open all financial books. This allows you to have a clear view on our sustainability as your long term partner.

The first rating via the trade insurance market was finished with AA+. Besides this rating of the world’s leading trade insurance companies, in the middle of this year we decided to also open our books for the tough rating of the German Federal Bank. The Federal Bank rates the financial background in 7 levels. Level 1 – 4 means, that every loan sufficed by a commercial bank to a customer is fully accepted by the Fed as substantial deposit. Our rating is 2.5.

This means that YOU CAN RELY ON US!

Is the LED-Backlight really the technological revolution in comparison with the

traditional CCFL-backlight?

Over the last year we have received more and more requests concerning TFTs with LED backlight. Is the LED powered backlight really the perfect solution or just a passing technological fad?

Our comparison CCFL/LED is based on public internet sources and is a neutral consideration (since we offer both options). We want to have a clear view on energy consumption, eco friendliness and technological advantages vs. disadvantages.

Energy consumption:

There are different special interest groups such as the Japanese Business Council, which consists of experts from the most important Japanese electronic companies. These groups have announced that an average 46" TFT - TV with LED backlight is consuming almost the same energy as a comparable TFT TV with CCFL-backlight. Basically the light emission efficiency of LEDs is only 60% of CCFL-tubes. For the identical light emission in lux the energy consumption of LED is higher.

Eco friendliness:

On the one hand LEDs have a very positive reputation concerning eco-friendliness, because CCFL-tubes are known for their mercury.  On the other hand for the production of LED chips Gallium Arsenide is one of the basic materials. This semiconductor hybrid is based on Arsenic, which is a very contaminative material!

Also the energy consumption for the pure LED production process is significantly higher.

Advantages vs. disadvantages in technology:

Consider the lower working temperature of LED in comparison with CCFL provides a perfect performance, with no negative influence on the half life time. In the upper area of working temperature (> 40 degree Celsius) both technologies have the same characteristics: reduction of half life time.

With LED it is possible to realize an enclosure thickness < 1 cm (for example CMO M220Z3).

Another advantage of LED is the ability of a dimming range from 0-100% within the complete range of working temperature, the immediate full brightness after switching on, especially in the lower working temperature, as well as the possibility of power supply without a high frequency power converter. Also a dynamically controlled contrast regulation can be achieved with LED (see Samsung LTI700HD02).

Half life time backlight & industrial reliability: identical high level.

Commercial consideration:

The current average price adder on LED in comparison with CCFL is approximately +20 to +30%. It has to be considered case by case, whether this price adder can be applied in the application based on one of the above mentioned technical advantages.

A possible and attractive strategy could be to start the design today with the CCFL-version and to have the future option to move to the compatible LED-version, if the pricing is more appealing or equal.

Based on the neutral comparison we see no reason for a change in our strategy, we are still going to offer CCFL as well as LED back-lighted TFT-Displays.

Our Credo: Always provide the perfect solution for your project request!

PrismaMEDIA II: Test results by 3G SDI Broadcast Company

The PrismaMEDIA II Rev. 1.0 has been completely tested in our laboratories for all input signals.

Due to the fact that this is our first use of the 3G SDI (Serial Digital Interface) input, we asked one of our German customers in the broadcast industry to do us the favour, and test the SDI-performance.

The feedback was very positive. Therefore we released the production for the first batch based on the Rev. 1.1. Beginning in the end of January 2010 the first production run should be available ex stock for samples and small series.

The CAD-3D data for your construction is already available.

Data Compression Software for ArtistaUSB

For our patented ArtistaUSB controller, which enables the direct controlling of TFT displays via USB 2.0 interface, we are now offering project-oriented data compression software. Via the USB-interface with a bandwidth of 48 MB/s without data compression with a SVGA-TFT app. 50 picture/s can be transferred.

During the development process of our Artista data compression software our goal was to realize the balance between efficient data compression and low CPU-load. Our solution: at least a virtual doubling of bandwidth (transmission-rate), which provides depending on resolution following picture rates (> 25 is video quality):

VGA > 150 picture/s                     SVGA > 100 picture/s            XGA > 60 picture/s

WXGA > 50 picture/s                    SXGA > 40 picture/s              Full HD > 20 picture/s

Of course we are already evaluating the future USB 3.0 - standard.

We would appreciate your detailed questions. For questions please contact us.

Customer application: monitor for boat bridges

One of our German customers is specialized for boat bridge equipment. For a new project "control system for outdoor boat bridges" an as bright as possible and sunshine readable 15" TFT, dimming ability from 0-100% was required.   Besides that, the terminal would be operated via a capacitive touch with a seawater protective front finish.

For this application our G150X1-L02-V444B was selected. This 15” TFT-panel is based on the CMO G150X1-L02 and is back lighted with our own LED technology.  Additionally we implement special transflective foils in our class 1000 clean room, which significantly improves the sunshine readability and basic brightness. This means typ. > 750 nit.  Zytronic "capacitive through glass" was selected as touch technology.

The seawater protection was achieved via Optical Bonding. During this production process the protection glass is top laminated on the display.  The gap between front glass and display is filled with a special fluid, which improves the mechanical shock resistance.

We would be glad to offer a solution for your project. For questions please contact us.
