Embedded-Newsletter May 2010

Dear Partner:

Over the last two years we have been confronted with the world’s economic and banking crises, now we have the Euro-crisis. It is really not easy to not lose control in this confusing world. Can we rely on a further economic recovery? What to do?

We should mainly do one thing: let’s keep our straightforward way and let us use the advantages of our business location Europe. Currently I am spending a significant amount of time with our US subsidiary close to New York City thus having a direct comparison of both worlds, the direct comparison of Europe and USA/Canada.

The most significant difference in this comparison of weaknesses & strengths is the quality of our technicians and skilled workers. More than ever before I understand that the real value of our companies - besides attractive products - is the quality of our employees. It is our job and challenge to protect and maybe even extend this advantage with consequent investments in human resource and education.

This is definitely more important then to focus on Euro-, stock exchange- or gold indexes every single day. Long term strategies, innovation and quality will protect our future!

I keep it with the former Nike slogan: "Don’t talk, just do it".

Yours,

Bernhard Staller

The (r)evolution of sunshine readability: Quicklogic

Over many years we have supplied passive optimized TFTs for outdoor/sunshine applications (transflective, bright LED-backlight, optical bonding etc.). These passive efforts are expensive. Since years we have spent many thoughts on how to get similar or even better results with reduced costs.

For more than two years we have been preparing a (r)evolution regarding technology and pricing together with our partner Quicklogic (www.quicklogic.com). Now we are ready for the launch!

Since the beginning of May we have been working in a world-wide exclusive partnership with Quicklogic to develop products for the electronic improvement of sunshine readability of TFT displays. Key words are contrast improvement (VEE machine) and Backlight-Power-Management (DPO machine).

Please download a video form our website which was shot in our labs. The video shows two identical CMO 15" TFTs driven with- and without this revolutionary technology. This realistic video will inspire you!

OEM successor version for the popular 10.4“ VGA-TFT from Optrex

Over the last 10 years we supplied the popular Optrex TFT-Display T-51513D104JU-FW-A-AC in huge quantities (our part number OP-01-014). The high market acceptance was based on the good optical performance, the extended operating temperature and the dual supply-voltage Vcc 3,3V/5V. This display now is not available any more.

Due to the huge quantities and steady negotiations we were able to convince Optrex to supply an OEM-replacement-version for our European markets.

Please click here for more details concerning the successor HLD1045AE3 (5V & 3.3V; VGA; 10.4”; the new part number is HD-02-060). Due to a more modern CCFL-tube now the CCFL voltages are different. That’s the only difference.

We already have ordered the first production lot and the confirmed delivery date is scheduled for mid-August.

We hope that this effort is meeting your needs! For more information please contact us.

RGB/DVI/Video-converter Prisma III with extended operating temperature

As already announced in our previews we can now offer the new and powerful Prisma III with a operating temperature of -20..+70° Celsius.

All temperature tests were passed with flying colours.

But this is not the end: with a Turkish industrial- and military technology customer we launched a project to reach a operating temperature of -40..+70° Celsius - and we can’t wait to see the result!

We will keep you informed!

Firmware/Software-development based on process norm

When developing firmware and software we try to meet the process norm EN 50128 as much as possible in order to achieve the highest level of quality. This norm defines a certain development process. Meeting this defined process allows the assumption that the defined software is working properly. The following criteria have to be met:

·         Top-down-design-process

·         Modularity

·         Verification of every development step

·         Use of proven software-modules and -module libraries

·         Clear documentation

·         Proven documentation

·         Software test on the target hardware

We have still a long way in front of us to meet this norm; but we will not stop to come as close as possible!

Please contact us for further questions.

Multi-Touchscreens from IR Touch

Multi-Touchscreens from IR Touch are now available in sizes from 12.1“ to 52” (soon up to 82").

They can be operated with 2 fingers; the USB-controller is already integrated into the bezel of the touch-screen.

There are two different versions available:

·         Windows 7 HID-Device (Human Interface Device): this touch works as a plug&play device without any drivers under Win7 and offers any multitouch feature which is supported by default. For example it is possible to use two fingers in "Paint".  Or you can rotate or zoom in/out pictures in the standard Windows picture viewer.

·         Version with SDK (Software Development Kit) protocol: this is the solution for customized multitouch applications. It works independently from the Windows mouse pointer and can be programmed by using the SDK from IR Touch. The SDK will be supplied (support of OS WIN 7 / Vista / XP / 2003 and Linux Fedora Code 4) free of charge; the SDK also contains a demo program from IR Touch.

Infrared touch-screens are very robust against environmental influences and can also be operated with gloves or a pen. Therefore this technology can be used for any indoor- and outdoor application.

Customer-application: Railway-Terminal for London Tube

As in every Newsletter we would like to introduce a new customer project to you. Today we have a British project of a customer specialized in ruggedized control-terminals for (underground) railways. For a London Tube project a cockpit monitor was requested which had to meet tough norms regarding EMI-emission, vibrations, extreme temperatures and humidity.

As a TFT-display the customer selected the G121S1-L01 from ChiMei-Innolux, which has superior optical values like a brightness value of 450 cd/m², a contrast ratio of typ. 1000:1 and a viewing angle of 178° degree in horizontal and vertical viewing direction. This is unique in the range of 12.1" panels!

The selected controller is our "working-horse" VGA/DVI/Video–converter Prisma II. The outstanding performance and reliability of the Prisma II is best to be defined by the customer himself.

Please see this extract from the test report:

The unit has been tested and approved for use on rolling stock applications and conforms with all of the requirements with regard to EMC emissions and immunity, shock, vibration, heat, cold, humidity and electrical disturbances and transients. As you can see from the list of approvals on the data sheet the test criteria was very difficult to meet.

(...) Prisma was chosen on the basis of the quality of the video image and it is a European manufactured and supported product. It is highly unlikely that we could have achieved the test criteria with a mass produced far east supplied card.

Thanks for your help so far on this project.

We would be proud to also manage your project! For more information please contact use.
