WIDE VARIETY OF COMPETITION OR DEPENDENCY OF MONOSTRUCTURES & DIRECT IMPORTS FROM ASIA?

Dear Business Partner:

In these days the annual reports 2009 are going to be released. As expected most of the electronic component distributors and –specialists lost money. In 2010 the price levels seem to stay too low to consider a fair financial return on investment and necessary investments in future products. Low margins caused by global purchasing markets in combination with incalculable currency fluctuations and risks in aging stock via the high speed of innovation is in summary a high risk.

Of course a lot of mistakes and miss-management have been done in this component branch: Overspends in salaries based on the internet hypes of the late 1990s and early 2000s, too many direct competitors even in niche markets and finally bad orders with too low margins were accepted which were only based on "hope".

You should please ask yourself: could your short-run success in price-optimization, close or maybe even below the “pain-barrier” of your suppliers, become a boomerang? Financially groggy suppliers lost there strength to negotiate sufficient margins. But isn’t for all of us a wide variety of competition the basis for the American industrial future? What are the alternatives if the US basis of strong components distributors is gone: limited flow of information, payment in advance, high transportation costs and warranty abroad?

Guaranteeing the future for your business via a best-price-strategy will not be possible. Somewhere in the global world there will always be someone with a better price. Only innovation protects our jobs and competitiveness. This would not be possible without strong local partners. Please think about that when placing your next order.

Also, our annual report for 2009 is almost finished. Despite further high investments on the level of the previous years and deductions/allowances based on prudence principal we closed an acceptable 2009. The first quarter 2010 proves the positive tendency. So the outlook on 2010 is positive.

You are the center of our daily acting. For you we try everyday to become a little bit better!

Yours,

Bernhard Staller

Longer lead times and price increases for TFT-displays and touchscreens

During the last few months the lead times for TFT-panels in any size as well as for resistive-analog touch-screens have increased dramatically. The fast increase of order entry, fabs with reduced manpower & capacities and shortages in supply of basic material are causing this situation.

Please calculate at least 12-14 weeks for new orders or release orders. An improvement of this situation is not expected for the next 2 quarters.

15“ LED-displays with 950 resp. 850 cd/m² brightness

Also new in our product range are two 15“ displays, which are produced in our US- location in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. Both displays, which are based on the industrial G-series of CMO, are upgraded with a LED-backlight (half-value period: 50k hours) and/or with an AR-front/transflective film in our local clean room.

The G150X1-L02-V444G is a transflective 15" TFT-display with an LED-backlight and AR front-polarizer. With its very high brightness value of 950 cd/m² it is a perfect platform for e.g. applications in the multimedia and advertising sector. Due to the wide working temperature range Top -30...70°C it can be used in outdoor applications without the need of a special, expensive temperature management. The additional transflective upgrade additionally improves the readability in direct sunshine. The optimized viewing direction for this display is 6:00. For more information concerning this panel please click here.

The G150X1-L03-V508B is a transmissive 15" TFT-Display with a LED-backlight unit and a special AR-front for optimized sunshine readability. For this version the brightness is specified at 850 cd/m² and the operating temperature is -30..80°C. The optimized viewing direction is 12:00. For more information concerning this panel please click here.

Both panels have an XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) and a good viewing angle of 160° (horizontally and vertically).

Unlike CCFL backlight units, LED backlight units can be driven without the typical high voltage and high frequency. This makes the approval of EMI tests a lot easier. For the LED backlight/rails we are offering our own, perfectly adjusted LED-converter CCBR (up to 800 mA).

Intelligent Power-On-Sequencing for TFTs with integrated LED-converter

In most of the smaller TFTs with LED-backlight the LED-converter is integrated in the TFT-enclosure. The correct control of this LED-converter needs the corresponding Power-On-Sequencing of the supply voltage.

It is defined technology, that the power supply of the LED-converter has to be switched on not until the TFT supply voltage Vcc and the data signals are already active.

To prevent damages in the circuitry of your TFT and to meet future requests too, our engineers designed-in these features already today on our new controller-boards Prisma III and PrismaMEDIA II .

Transparent Picture in Picture (PiP) at Prisma III and PrismaMEDIA II

Our HDMI(HDCP)/VGA/DVI/Video–converter Prisma III and our multimedia-board PrismaMEDIA II are supporting a new function called "transparent Picutre in Picture" (PiP) besides many new other functionalities.  Via two defined inputs the feeding of the main-screen as well as the overlay-screen is possible.

The transparency of the overlay can be defined between 0% and 100% and the main-screen can be seen through the overlay depending on the level of transparency (see pictures below). Besides that the size of the PiP (up to 7/8) as well as the position within the display can be defined. Any adjustment can be made via the comprehensive OSD-menu.

In addition to PiP there is the PaP function (Picture by Picture).

Comparison of DVI vs. DisplayPort interface

To support you and your "application of tomorrow" with the most sophisticated interface-technologies on our controller-platforms, we implemented a DisplayPort-input on our new PrismaMEDIA II.

DisplayPort is a VESA standardized universal and licence-free interconnection-standard for high-speed audio- and video-transfer. In direct comparison with DVI, DisplayPort as the next generation interface shows different advantages like e.g. a smaller connector.

Another important advantage is the possibility of a much longer data supply cable: approx. 15m with DisplayPort vs. approx. 4m with DVI.

Customer-application: Coffee Bar with 15“ TFT and Touchscreen

Today we present you an application of one of our British customers.

A coffee chain started investing into coffee machines with the design of a self service counter a couple of years ago. Those coffee machines were designed for use in high footfall environments like shopping malls.

For a new model a simple and user-friendly operation via touch-screen had to be realized. Via the intelligent user interface located in the middle of the coffee bar the user can select the coffee he wants to drink as well as the way of payment (cash or credit card).

For this 24/7 application all components had to be high-quality industrial standard and stable long term availability was also a must.

The Optrex-TFT T-51863D150J-FW-A-AE with a resolution of (1024x768) was selected because of min. 5 years availability. Also the superior optical performance regarding brightness (450cd/m²), viewing angle and colour saturation was an important argument for the decision.

Long term availability and a high-quality industrial standard of the TFT need an equivalent on the controller side. Therefore our VGA/DVI-converter PrismaECO II with a perfect price/performance ratio and low power consumption was selected.

The selected touch-screen is the 15Projected-Capacitive version from Zytronic. This touch technology is the perfect solution for public applications. The touch sensor is on the rear side of the glass (unlike with other capacitive technologies) and thus protected against direct contact. Hence it is perfectly protected against dirt, vandalism, detergents or dissolver - or even coffee, cappuccino or espresso!

Can we help you with your new project? Please never hesitate to contact us!
